KASHMERE GATE METRO STATION - ART INSTALLATION, DELHI
In association with ORRYX India and INTACH
Completed : 2017; 2 Panels of 30 m x 3 m each
As part of a larger project of installations for all the metro stations on the heritage line we were involved in the development and exectution of the installation at the Kashmere gate metro station. The installation is conceived as a system of layers that tells the story of the Kashmere Gate historical precinct through multiple media like screens, vinyl prints and 3 dimensional building elements.
The uniqueness of the precinct as an old Mughal area later taken over by the British is highlighted throug a mix of colonial influence elements/buildings as well as Mughal remants like the gate, Dara Shikoh library, Qudsia Bagh, etc. A wrought iron trellis element from the commercial areas around was incorporated to give the installation a human scale like when traversing the streets in and around the gate precinct.
Being a public space the considerations of fire safety, structural stability, time, budget and longevity were an important factor. Each element had to be detailed in a way to deal with heavy footfall and easy approachability of the installation.
